13th Annual NAMIWalk to be held at Dorothea Dix park in Raleigh

The Event Promotes Awareness about Mental Health Issues and Resources

On Saturday, May 6, 2017, the National Alliance on Mental Illness of North Carolina (NAMI NC) will be holding its NAMIWalks event at Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh. NAMIWalks is designed to raise awareness about mental health conditions and combat the misunderstanding and stigma surrounding mental illness.

While the event is free, participants are encouraged to seek donations from friends and family. All the funds generated by NAMIWalks NC will support NAMI NC’s offering of NAMI Signature Programs which provide education and support for individuals and families affected by mental illness. All of the NAMI Signature Programs, such as Family-to-Family, Peer-to-Peer, In Our Own Voice are offered to members of the public free of charge.

“NAMIWalks brings the community together to celebrate mental illness recovery, honor those who have lost their lives to mental illness, combat stigma, and promote awareness,” said Jack Register, Executive Director of NAMI North Carolina. “NAMIWalks' public, active display of support for people affected by mental illness and their loved ones, is an opportunity to overcome the stigma, increase public awareness of mental health conditions and raise funds that will help NAMI continue to provide education, support, and advocacy to those in need.”

Registration and check-in for the event starts at 8:00 a.m.; rain or shine. Pre-walk activities begin at 9:00 a.m. and include an Interactive Hoop Jam with Imagine Circus, Allred Magic, #whyiwalk photo booth, a dog parade and best dressed dog contest. The walk itself will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Along with the walk, the event will feature vendors and service organizations disseminating information about mental illness and available services. NAMI NC is expecting more than 1500 participants to join the walk.
