Camp Easter Seals UCP Partners with Commonwealth Autism Service to Support Campers with Autism

Bookmark and Share New Castle, VA - April 11, 2014 -

Camp Easter Seals UCP, a recreational and therapeutic camp for children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities, is partnering with Commonwealth Autism Service and the Shenandoah Valley Regional Partnership to include behavioral analysts as part of the Camp support staff this summer. The addition of these specialized staff will provide additional support to campers with autism and behavioral challenges.

“Over the years, the number of campers with autism has increased,” said Alex Barge, Camp Easter Seals UCP director. “This increase is consistent with the recent CDC report noting that the prevalence rate for autism has increased 30 percent in the last six years. Our Camp support staff are trained to meet the physical and emotional needs of our campers. This partnership with Commonwealth Autism Service and the Shenandoah Valley Regional Partnership further enhances this support by being able to address the behavioral needs of individuals with autism.”

Nestled in the mountains of New Castle, VA, camp sessions begin June 8th with six and 12 day sessions for ages 7 and up. Campers and families come from all over the region. Space is limited and scholarship applications are available.

For 57 years, Camp Easter Seals UCP has offered children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy fun and challenging indoor and outdoor camp activities in a supportive and cooperative atmosphere. From campfire sing-a-longs and talent shows to canoeing, nature walks, swimming, zip-lining, rock climbing and arts and crafts, the Easter Seals UCP camping program provides the excitement and activity of a traditional summer camp program in a beautiful, accessible setting.

Camp Easter Seals UCP is accredited by the American Camp Association and more than 400 individuals and families enjoy Camp Easter Seals UCP each year. With the belief that all children and adults with disabilities should have the opportunity to participate in traditional camp activities, the accessible camp facility can accommodate campers with a wide range of special needs.
