Better Business Bureau (bbb.org) serving Eastern North Carolina announces today that electronics recycler GEEP will participate in their spring “Secure Your ID” Day, Saturday, May 17, 2014. The identity protection and recycling event will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Coastal Federal Credit Union headquarters (1000 St. Albans Drive) and Executive Office Suites of Lafayette Village (8480 Honeycutt Rd).

With identity fraud on the rise, it’s extremely important that phones, tablets and computers are disposed of properly. These devices contain personal data including, usernames, passwords, credit card account numbers, addresses, tax records and financial statements. Deleting files and browsing history does not completely remove this sensitive information.

Disposal of electronic devices also poses an environmental hazard. The GEEP process of recycling surpasses all applicable environmental safety standards to the point that the EPA uses GEEP to dispose of its old electronic devices. The company has a 97 percent landfill-free process breaking electric and electronic devices down to their base commodity such as copper, steel, aluminum, and plastics to be recycled to create new products.

“Used electronics contain sensitive information, but also contain materials that are hazardous to the environment,” says Greg Manis, GEEP North Carolina. “Electronics need to be processed through a certified recycling center so the hazardous materials like mercury, leaded glass, and other pollutants do not become part of the food and water supply.”

Individuals are encouraged to bring electric/electronic devices, such as computers, cell phones, tablets or TVs, as well as printers, fax machines, vacuums, dvd/cd players, microwaves and toasters or similar products.
