First-of -Their Kind Classes Focus on Correct Movements to Prevent Injury

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — Olympic Weightlifting 101 is not a class you’ll find at a local university, and it’s not training for the Olympic Games. But this new fitness class offered at a local physical therapy clinic is helping people prevent injury.

Olympic Weightlifting 101 and Jump 2 Perform are two classes offered at Back in Action Physical Therapy (BIA), which has offices in Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs. Registration has now begun for the classes, which start in mid-June.

While weightlifting classes are easily found in local gyms, Olympic Weightlifting 101 is the first such class in the Triangle taught by physical therapists.

“We usually see people after they have become hurt,” said James Wilson, Jr., the strength and conditioning coach at BIA. “While we’re glad to help those who are injured, we also want to educate people on ways to train effectively without injury.”

Each class is six weeks long and beginners are welcome. In Olympic Weightlifting, students will learn one new lift each week and practice performing the move correctly. In Jump 2 Perform, participants learn how to perform jump training moves. Jump training can increase performance and strength and is important for runners and other athletes. Jump training is a critical way to prevent injuries, especially tears to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

“Whether they are high school athletes or runners training for a race, we want to make sure fitness enthusiasts can reach new goals without the setback of injury,” said Dr. Laura Wilson, who will teach the jump training class.
