Terry Brown Jr. returned to Charlotte less than two years ago, after graduating from law school. You’d never guess that from his influence and contributions to our city.

He’s served as political director and treasurer of Trevor Fuller’s campaign for Mecklenburg County Commissioner. For his alma mater, UNC Charlotte, Brown mentors students and is a board member of the Black Alumni Association.

He organized a community forum on the Keith Scott shooting for the Urban League. And he contributes to the local arts scene as part of the steering committee for Bechtler Young Visionaries, an affiliate of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.

Now the litigation attorney at Horack Talley can add a new distinction to his resume. Terry Brown Jr. has won the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award from UNC Charlotte. Brown, class of 2009, will receive the honor at a banquet on April 21 at the Hilton Charlotte Center City.

The Outstanding Young Alumnus(na) Award honors recent graduates of UNC Charlotte within 10 years of graduation. It recognizes young graduates for exceptional accomplishments, achievements, and service. Candidates can be recognized for professional accomplishments, contributions to the academic community, volunteer service, and local, state and national contributions.

“Terry is a natural leader,” says Horack Talley attorney Anne Essaye. “I’ve mentored or supervised at least 15 young lawyers during my career. Terry has a maturity and poise that’s unusual. He’s already made a big impact in the community in a short time.”

Brown will be co-chair of the John S. Leary Bar Association of Black Attorneys in 2018. He is a recent graduate of the North Carolina New Leaders Council Fellowship Program, a bi-partisan organization which trains the next generation of leaders in business, politics, and entrepreneurship.

“UNC Charlotte was where I first realized my passion for the law and politics,” says Brown. “It means a great deal to me to be recognized by an institution that helped make me who I am.”

Brown is a member of Horack Talley's litigation practice and focuses on landlord/tenant disputes, title insurance, tort litigation and general commercial litigation.
