Presented at Annual Educator & Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast

Around 150 volunteers, participants and supporters gathered at PNC Arena in Raleigh on August 16 for Junior Achievement of Eastern North Carolina’s Educator & Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, sponsored by Delta Air Lines. During the festivities, JAENC presented its Outstanding Corporate Service Award to Fidelity Investments; its Outstanding Individual Service Award to Rick Towner; and its Outstanding Educator Award to Rosalynn Tennie.

JAENC is a 42-year-old nonprofit that strives to empower young people to own their economic success. It facilitates partnerships between schools, sponsors and volunteers across an 18-county area to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy by teaching financial literacy, workforce development and entrepreneurship to students in grades K-12.

Fidelity Investments has partnered with JAENC since 2010, presenting JA Economics for Success® and Job Shadow® programs for 2,700 students at Lowe’s Grove Middle School in Durham and Reedy Creek Middle School in Cary. In 2017 more than 65 Fidelity associates volunteered to teach during Fidelity Cares Day.

Towner has been volunteering with JAENC since 2010 and consistently signs up to teach multiple classes each year. During the 2016-2017 year, Towner taught 250 students in ten classes, totaling more than 1,500 contact hours.

Tennie is the career development coordinator at Heritage Middle School in Wake Forest, and has partnered with JAENC for the last eight years. Under her leadership more than 1,900 students at Heritage have participated in JA programming.

Attendees heard from board members, teachers and students about their JA experiences. The breakfast also included announcements of the following highlights from the 2016-2017 year:

• 432 classes offered

• 11,317 students served (a record high)

• 62,773 instructional contact hours (another record)

• For the third year in a row, JAENC was recognized by Junior Achievement USA with the 4 Star Award for Outstanding Performance in program impact, program quality, financial solvency and management effectiveness

“We’d like to extend our sincere gratitude to all our sponsors and volunteers,” said Bebee Bason Lee, president of JAENC. “We cannot serve the number of students we do without their support, and we also thank all the local teachers who gave our volunteers time in their classrooms to impart important life lessons.”
