Kristin Lozoya, NC Artist, will be the "Artist of the Month" at Cup A Joe (3100 Hillsborough Street Raleigh, NC 27607) in August. The exhibit will be centered on Kristin's Autistic 5 year old daughter and her therapy cockatiel's unique relationship. In a series of portraits, Lozoya explores their cockatiel's amazing ability to connect with her daughter. Lozoya hopes to expand upon this collection to make an art anthology celebrating their friendship.

Lozoya's Daughter is obsessed with pterodactyls and that gave rise to a love all animals with wings. Over two years ago, Lozoya decided a cockatiel could be a great companion for her daughter.

Upon receiving the bird, Lozoya's daughter with VERY limited speech quipped "I always wanted bird." It was her first intelligible sentence.

Lozoya's Daughter is prompted to greet the bird when she comes home. This has been done so often that the bird chirps "Hello Doodle [his name]" to everyone that comes in the door.

Lozoya's Daughter 'reads' with her bird, eats snacks, cuddles on couch, does puzzles and other activities meant to promote socialization, empathy and understanding personal space.
