Wake Technical Community College is honored to be a recipient of the 2015 City of Raleigh Green Design Award for Montague Hall, which opened last year on the college’s Main Campus. The 48,721-square-foot classroom/administration building was named the best non-residential Green Building Design project. It was designed by Little Diversified Architectural Consulting to achieve LEED Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Awards were handed out on April 22 at the Museum of Natural Sciences.

Montague Hall was built within an existing parking lot, reducing the amount of natural vegetation lost in construction. Recycled materials were used wherever possible and were sustainably harvested and locally sourced – including reuse of the parking lot and its gravel sub base. In addition, zero VOC paints and low-VOC interior finishes were used for better indoor air quality. Other sustainable features were part of the building’s green design, including an energy-efficient HVAC design, low-flow water fixtures, occupancy sensors and dimmable lighting, water-efficient landscaping, and exterior shading devices.

Wake Tech has worked to advance energy conservation, responsible land use, and other environmental best practices – as well as green building technologies – college wide. Wake Tech’s Northern Wake Campus, which opened in 2007 on Louisburg Road in Raleigh, is the nation’s first college or university campus to have all buildings LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. This is the first environmental award for a building on Wake Tech’s Main Campus.
