To help celebrate Blue Water Day, RBC Bank today announced Operation Medicine Drop has prevented 61 million doses of prescription drugs from flowing into North Carolina water systems in the last five years, thanks to RBC Blue Water Project grants. The Pamlico-Tar River Foundation helped form Operation Medicine Drop, which was created in 2009, with a $100,000 RBC Blue Water Project grant from RBC Royal Bank.

Operation Medicine Drop partners with North Carolina law enforcement through Take-Back events to safely dispose of unused, unnecessary or expired prescription medications. You can view the calendar of events here and you can look for permanent collection boxes here.

“Operation Medicine Drop is an extension of our mission to monitor and enhance the Tar-Pamlico River as well as other North Carolina reservoirs,” said Harrison Marks, executive director at the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation. “We’re incredibly thankful for the partnership with RBC Royal Bank whose generous donation helped us kick-start such an impactful program. The program has been embraced and adopted by Riverkeeper® organizations from across North Carolina.”

The RBC Blue Water Project is a historic, wide-ranging, 10-year global commitment to help protect the world's most precious natural resource: fresh water. Since 2007, RBC has pledged nearly $41 million to more than 700 charitable organizations worldwide that protect water, including the grants announced today, with an additional $8.8 million pledged to universities for water programs.

“The Pamlico-Tar River Foundation and their work with Operation Medicine Drop has made a huge impact in RBC Bank’s own backyard,” said Kristen Doherty, vice president of sales, marketing and communications at RBC Bank. “We are so glad RBC’s initial grants could help fund such an incredible initiative which benefits North Carolinians and protects watersheds.”
