Second Saturday Wake County Brings Divorce Help to Women

Bookmark and Share Raleigh, N.C. - October 02, 2014 -

As financial adviser Bob Watral watched his sister and other women go through divorce, he realized how much information they had to find to get through the process.

So Watral created Second Saturday Wake County, a source of information and resources for women considering divorce, which begins in Raleigh Oct. 11.

Second Saturday Wake County is a new monthly workshop offering divorce facts from professionals. Each month a family law attorney, a financial professional and a therapist will offer unbiased information for those thinking about untying the knot.

“Divorce is confusing,” Watral said. “Watching my sister, I realized how stressful it is, especially for women who are not working or who may not make enough money to support themselves. This workshop offers facts and instructions, a steady path during this challenging time.”

Watral coordinated with The Women’s Institute for Financial Education to replicate their Second Saturday workshops, originally begun in 1988.

“Divorce is the single biggest financial transaction of your entire life,” said Ginita Wall, co-founder of WIFE.org. “That fact is not something many realize, and it's so important to be prepared. We're excited to see these workshops spread across the country.”

The first Wake County workshop is from 8:30 to noon Oct. 11. Monthly sessions will continue each second Saturday thereafter. Sessions are held in an office building, not a public space, so that people considering divorce can attend without the fear of possibly bumping into friends and colleagues, Watral said. Although mostly aimed at women, all are welcome to attend.

During each session, the trio of professionals will review topics such as the divorce process, information about child custody and support, protecting yourself legally and financially, dealing with a hostile spouse, helping your family cope, dividing property, tax consequences, avoiding divorce court and more.

The professionals will rotate each month; all are volunteers, Watral said.

“It’s always the right time to do the right thing,” Watral said, quoting Martin Luther King, Jr. “This workshop is the right thing to do to help.”
