"Tiny Home" for Raleigh's Homeless: Pig Pickin' + Silent Auction Fundraiser October 5th

James Beard Award-winning Chef Ashley Christensen of Poole’s Diner (among other eateries) in Raleigh and Matt Kelley of Mateo Bar de Tapas in Durham will roast a pig for the first annual “Pig Pickin’ + Silent Auction” to be held in downtown Raleigh on Sunday, October 5, from 5-8 p.m. at the AIA NC Center for Architecture & Design.

The “Pig Pickin’ + Silent Auction” is a collaborative effort between AIA NC Activate14 and the Raleigh-Wake Partnership to Prevent and End Homelessness to benefit urban housing solutions for the estimated 1700 chronically homeless people in Raleigh. It is the first step of a pilot program to build a transitional “tiny home” for someone in need in Raleigh. A “tiny home” can be as small as 90 square feet complete with bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living quarter.

“Tiny homes offer the potential to address homelessness in ways traditional housing cannot,” said Catherine Hofmann, one of the event coordinators for Activate 14. “A tiny home will cost around $10,000, a fraction of what traditional affordable housing costs.”

This tiny home will be used as a transitional service to help people move from homelessness to long-term affordable housing.

Silent auction items available that night will include works by artists Thomas Sayre, Gayle Stott Lowry, and Corey Mason; a magnum of Krug Grande Cuvee Champagne; and sketches by renowned architects, including Frank Harmon, Tom Barrie, Clymer Cease, and Phil Szostak, among others. Videri Chocolate Factory in Raleigh will provide desserts.

Activate14 is a community outreach initiative by the American Institute of Architects’ North Carolina chapter (AIA NC), which will include a 2015 design competition that will result in a winning tiny home design to be built in the spring of 2015.

The funds raised at the October event will be used for building materials and labor costs.

Tickets are $100 per person and are on sale now at www.a14fundraiser.eventbrite.com. The AIA NC Center for Architecture & Design is located at 14 East Peace Street, Raleigh, NC 27604.
