RALEIGH, N.C., March 16, 2016 – VMZINC®-US, the international brand name of rolled zinc products, has announced that the company will sponsor the Triangle CANstruction Competition Awards Gala on Friday, April 1, benefitting the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. The gala will be held from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Lucky B’s, located at 609 Tucker Street in Raleigh. The awards ceremony will begin at 9 p.m.

CANstruction Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that holds annual design and build competitions across the country, in which participants are challenged to construct giant-sized structures made entirely out of donated canned food. This unique annual event combining architecture and activism collects millions of pounds of food worldwide each year in an effort to reduce world hunger one community at a time. The work of CANstruction has helped raise nearly 30 million pounds of food since 1992 and holds events annually in over 150 cities around the world.

For the Triangle competition on April 1, teams of architects, engineers, contractors and designers from local companies, including JDavis Architects, Flad Architects, Red Hat, Clark Nexsen, FDH Velocitel, Gensler, LS3P Associates, Stroud Pence & Associates, and Smith Sinnett, as well as students from Wake Technical Community College, will have 12 hours to construct their sculptures in various locations in downtown Raleigh. All participants are asked to create a sculpture reflective of this year’s “Heroes” theme. On February 17, children served by the Raleigh Salvation Army each drew a picture of their hero and explained how he or she would fight hunger. Each picture will be featured on the front of the Triangle CANstruction competition t-shirts to further inspire the competitors to achieve tremendous sculptures.

The public will have the chance to view the sculptures during the First Friday Gallery Walk from 5 to 9 p.m. At the end of April, all Cansculptures™ will be dismantled, and the cans used to build each sculpture will be donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which supports the Salvation Army’s new Raleigh facility on Capital Boulevard and other nonprofits in the area.
