Curamericas Global Receives Second Installment of $1.49 Million Grant

Curamericas Global has been approved to receive $578,722 from Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) as the second installment of a previous grant from the global charity. In 2017, the Raleigh-based nonprofit was awarded a total of $1.49 million at the RMHC International Conference for its contributions to the global health and wellbeing of underserved women and children in forgotten communities.

“We could not be more thankful for the support of RMHC in approving the second installment of this grant,” said Andrew Herrera, Curamericas Global Executive Director. “This funding will allow Curamericas to continue to implement our revolutionary Community Birthing Center “Casa Materna” model for reducing maternal/neonatal mortality and child stunting in high-mortality regions across the world.”

The “Casa Materna” model provides a culturally acceptable, patient-centered space for women to give birth safely and comfortably. In addition to birthing services, the center provides reproductive health care and education to women for whom access to medical facilities are dangerously limited. This is part of the nonprofit’s community-based, impact-oriented (CBIO) methodology, which not only allows for treatment by Curamericas volunteers, but educates local health care providers so they can continue effective treatment long-term, with the goal of leading to sustainability.

RMHC approved the grant’s second installment after Curamericas representatives attended the very first RMHC Global Maternal and Child Health Summit this August in Chicago. They demonstrated the impact and services of the newly funded programs alongside leading researchers, public health experts, and other grant recipients.
