Stewart Sets the Stage for Future Growth for Small to Mid-Sized Communities Across State

Stewart, an interdisciplinary design, engineering and planning firm, is guiding the future growth of communities across North Carolina with its rapidly growing customized planning services. Over the past two years alone, the planning and municipal services group has impacted municipalities and counties across the state, in part due to its focus on small to mid-sized communities as well as the firm’s emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and years of combined experience across planners, landscape architects and civil engineers.

As a segment of Stewart’s planning and design practice area, the planning and municipal services group is uniquely positioned to bring together these three distinct yet intertwined disciplines, providing a unique data driven and design-oriented approach that results in stronger and more creative solutions. Projects currently underway include developing comprehensive plans, Unified Development Ordinances, small area plans, growth management plans and land use plans.

Through these projects, the impact Stewart is making can be seen throughout North Carolina, from Pitt, Harnett and Jackson Counties to the Towns of Smithfield, Indian Trail, Swansboro and communities in between.

“Stewart’s planning and municipal services group approaches each project wanting to learn about the community, and help you find the things that will make your community better – whether it’s a streetscape master plan to enhance a downtown area or updates to the zoning code to better serve the community,” said David DeYoung, economic and community development director, Town of Clayton. “We chose to bring in Stewart’s planning and municipal services group due to the firm’s responsiveness and ability to see what our needs are to deliver a quality product. When we hire Stewart, they function as an extension to our current staff.”

Stewart emphasizes the importance of building relationships with its clients - even after project completion. The planning and municipal services group provides six months of continuing service following project completion, including addressing questions and providing support as clients navigate their new codes and plans.

“Stewart brings together the technical skills of civil engineers, the keen attention to design of landscape architects and the community vision of planners for each project,” said Cindy Szwarckop, associate vice president and manager, planning and municipal services at Stewart. “This emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration effectively delivers on our clients’ needs and expertly positions our firm to create documents that will guide their future growth. Our planning and municipal services group understands the unique challenges and requirements of communities throughout the state, and we look forward to the continued opportunity to partner with our clients and lead communities to success.”
