Charlotte-based Team Cigna Cycling 24-Hours to Help Fight Cancer

Bookmark and Share Charlotte, NC - July 16, 2012 -

Twenty members of Team Cigna, employees and partners, will be pedaling round-the-clock to raise money for cancer research and survivorship in the Charlotte 24 Hours of Booty ride, the official 24-hour cycling event of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, on July 27 and 28. Charlotte is the headquarters of 24 Hours of Booty. The ride begins at 7:00 p.m., July 27 and concludes at 7:00 p.m. on July 28, taking riders through the Myers Park neighborhood.

“We appreciate the ongoing support of Cigna and its team members who have gone above and beyond to support our organization and event,” said Basil Lyberg, executive director of 24 Hours of Booty. “Their passion for inspiring people to see the best in themselves and for making a difference in our community and the fight against cancer is commendable.”

“In addition to Cigna's commitment to health and well-being, we also have very personal reasons for assembling the team and riding in this event,” said Charlie Pitts, Cigna president and general manager for the Carolinas who will be riding in the event. “One of our participants rides in honor of his friend’s mother. Another member previously had a heart attack and cycling is his form of exercise. Particularly motivating to all of us is our friend and co-worker who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and is going through treatment.”

This is the second consecutive year that Cigna's Charlotte office has participated in the 24-hour ride. “Cigna is committed to the health of the communities where we live and work, and 24 Hours of Booty is an exhilarating and meaningful way to keep this top of mind,” said Pitts. Cigna's employee-riders also plan to take advantage of a Cigna program that provides $100 grants to charity when a Cigna employee participates in organized fitness activities in support of community organizations, such as runs, walks and cycling events, that are open to the general public.”

This year, Cigna joined with 24 Hours of Booty to sponsor an essay contest encouraging riders to describe how participating in a 24 Hours of Booty ride has helped them to reach a health and wellness goal. The winner will be announced on July 26, honored during the opening ceremonies by Cigna's president and general manager, and will ride the first loop with the Cigna team. More information on the essay contest is available at http://www.24hoursofbooty.org/site/PageServer?pagename=gocigna

Charlotte's Myers Park neighborhood is home to the original Booty Loop. In partnership with presenting sponsor, Levine Cancer Institute, 24 Hours of Booty Charlotte will celebrate its eleventh year and host 1,200 riders who will raise more than $1 million for cancer research and survivorship.

24 Hours of Booty is the premier organization for integrating community cancer fundraising and cycling to engage communities in support of cancer research and programs. Since 2002, their mission has been to conduct 24-hour cycling events that increase public awareness, funds, and support for LIVESTRONG™ and local cancer organizations.
