Curling Olympic Tour Comes to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Past and potential Olympians come to the Charlotte Curling Association, January 23-25, to lead clinics for curlers of all ages and experience levels. Olympic Gold Medalist Jamie Korab, former Team Canada member Abbie Darnley, and U.S. Curling Association High Performance program member Jamie Sinclair will lead clinics and be available for Meet & Greet opportunities throughout the weekend. The Charlotte Curling Association invites anyone interested in learning the sport of curling from some of the world’s best to register through the club website (http://www.charlottecurling.com) for an instructional session.

Fri., Jan. 23, 7:00 pm-8:45 pm – Beginner instruction followed by a game – $25

Sat., Jan. 24, 9:00 am-11:00 am – Juniors class geared towards those in Grades 5-12 – $10 (scholarships available)

Saturday, Jan. 24, 12:00 pm-3:00 pm – Basics of delivery and sweeping, 45 minutes of instruction – $10

Anyone participating in an instructional session is invited to register for the Olympic Microspiel on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 9:00 am-11:00 am and 1:00 pm-3:00 pm. Cost is $10 per person for either or both sessions. Additionally, the public is invited to a free Meet the Olympian social event on Saturday, Jan. 24 beginning at 6:30 pm with pick-up curling games starting at 7:30 pm. All are also welcome to watch any of the instructional sessions and games.

Jamie Korab is a 2006 Olympic Gold Medalist (Torino, Italy) whose 2010 team finished the season ranked 3rd in the world. He competed in eight Canadian National Curling Championships. Korab sits on the board of directors for Kids East Smart and spends many hours assisting other charities and promoting healthy eating and living.

Abbie Darnley competed for Team Canada in the 2008 International Spiel held in Karziuawa, Japan, and was a 2012 Ontario Curling Association Women’s Provincial Finalist. Her team won the 2003 Ontario University Athletics Women’s Curling Championship. She is a member of the Ontario Curling Association GTA Coaching Team, instructing staff and curlers at numerous clubs.

Charlotte Curling member Jamie Sinclair has qualified to participate in the United States Curling Association’s “High Performance” 2018 Program, designed to train Olympic-caliber athletes. She was the skip on the Carleton Ravens team that won the 2014 Canadian National Women’s University Championship. She lives and trains in Ottawa, Canada and is a certified Level 2 Instructor.

Friday, Jan. 23, 1:00 pm-3:00 pm – Media Open House

Friday, Jan. 23, 7:00 pm-8:45 pm – Olympic Learn to Curl – $25 – open to general public

One hour of beginners instruction, followed by one hour of game play. Limit 32 students.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 9:00 am-11:00 am – Olympic Juniors Learn to Curl – $10 – open to general public

Geared toward participants in Grades 5-12. Limit 24 students.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 12:00 pm-3:00 pm – Olympic Open House

Group instruction, 45-minute sessions, on basic delivery and sweeping.

No pre-registration necessary for this session. First-come/first-served basis.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 6:30 pm-8:00 pm – Meet the Olympian – free social event, open to the public

Pick-up curling begins at 7:30 pm.

Sunday, Jan. 25, 9:00 am-11:00 am and 1:00 pm-3:00 pm – Olympic Microspiel – $10 for either or both sessions

Opportunity for new curlers to team with Charlotte Curling Association members and receive in-game

coaching from Jamie Korab, Abbie Darnley, and Jamie Sinclair.

Open to anyone who participates in one of the instructional events. Register on-site throughout the weekend.

Cost includes lunch and awards ceremony at 3:30 pm.
