What:

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund today announced it has made a $115,000 contribution to support the latest Rex Healthcare mobile mammography unit. The unit will broaden capabilities to provide high-quality mammography services to areas across central and eastern North Carolina where women have difficulty accessing healthcare. The mobile unit’s first scheduled Wake County stop will offer screening mammograms at Wake County Health and Human Services on Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 9 to 11:45 a.m.

Another Rex mobile mammography unit that the Kay Yow Cancer Fund supported was unveiled in 2011 and features Coach Kay Yow’s image. Fittingly nicknamed “The Coach,” the unit has screened thousands of women throughout 15 counties in N.C. The new unit will support the goal to fight breast cancer through early detection. If a patient’s screening mammogram reveals concerns, that patient is directed to follow up to ensure accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

The funding of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund contributed to the digital mammography equipment on board.

Why:

The relationship with Rex Healthcare aligns with the mission of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund: to support scientific research focused on women’s cancers and projects that assist the underserved community. The mobile mammography unit allows for early detection of breast cancer, meaning treatment can begin sooner in the course of the disease, even possibly before it has spread, which highly increases chances of survival.

Founded from the vision of the organization’s namesake Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach who passed away in 2009 after her 22-year battle with breast cancer, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund is committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers.
