When the MODTriangle Architecture Movie Series continues on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at the Raleigh Grande Cinema, the Raleigh Historic Development Commission (RHDC) offers a workshop for homeowners of Modernist houses before a special screening of “If You Build It,” a documentary on bringing architecture education to Bertie County.

Hosted by North Carolina Modernist Houses (NCMH) and sponsored by Sarah Sonke of MODTriangle Real Estate and Auctions, the evening begins at 6:30 p.m. as Modernist enthusiast Nick Fountain explains how he worked with the RHDC to restore, expand, and protect the Fadum House, a Raleigh Historic Landmark property. Participants learn how they can preserve their property through historic landmark designation.

Beginning at 7:30, “If You Build It” follows designer-activists Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller to Bertie County, North Carolina’s poorest, where they worked with 13 local high school students for a year teaching design construction skills while challenging their sense of what is possible.
