Tammy Scott, a volunteer with the Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter (LFANC), was named a finalist in the Greater Wilmington Business Journal’s “2015 Health Care Heroes” awards program.

Scott, a support group facilitator with LFANC, was chosen as a finalist in the “Health Care Heroes: Volunteer” category. Involved with LFANC for more than 10 years and a lupus thriver, Scott helped launch the LFANC Support Group in Wilmington, N.C. after learning that the closest lupus support group was over two hours away. This January, the group will celebrate its sixth anniversary. She also rallies the Lupus Support Group attendees and other members of the community to participate in “Put On Purple Day” for lupus each May. Last year, she was named “Volunteer of the Year” for LFANC.

“We are so proud of Tammy [Scott] for being a finalist among the health care heroes in Wilmington,” said Christine John-Fuller, President and CEO of LFANC. “She has an incredible talent for connecting and caring with each lupus patient she meets. Over the years she has made dealing with the disease so much easier for so many people. She is a true health care hero.”

About Lupus:

Lupus is an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of the body. It is difficult to diagnose, hard to live with, and a challenge to treat. Lupus is a cruel mystery because it is hidden from view and undefined, has a range of symptoms, hits out of nowhere, and has no known cause and no known cure. Its health effects can range from a skin rash to a heart attack. Lupus is debilitating and destructive, and can be fatal, yet research on lupus remains underfunded relative to its scope and devastation.
