The railroad is operated by an all-volunteer crew and is a member of the Association of Railway Museums and the East Carolina Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.

NHVR, also known as the Triangle’s Train, operates full-size locomotives at its rail yard located in Bonsal, N.C., 30 minutes southwest of downtown Raleigh. The steam and diesel trains carry passengers on a one-hour, round-trip ride through scenic woods. Trains generally operate one Friday and one weekend day each month, beginning in April through the end of the year. There are also special event trains and Halloween and Santa Trains for the holidays.
