For cadaver dogs, it’s a game. For humans, it’s an important way to search for the missing.

Cat Warren, author of "What the Dog Knows: The Science and Wonder of Working Dogs,” will talk about working with cadaver dogs during a special event to benefit the nonprofit Raleigh Public Record.

The event takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Cimos, 111 E. Hargett St. Raleigh.

Warren’s German Shepherd, Solo, is a cadaver dog, who helps track down missing people in North Carolina. In her book, Warren uses her odyssey with Solo to enter the broader world of scent-detection dogs, revealing the remarkable capabilities of working dogs, their handlers, and their trainers.

The N.C. State professor will discuss her journey at the event, which includes light refreshments, a cash bar and the opportunity to purchase an autographed copy. Proceeds from the event benefit the Raleigh Public Record, a nonprofit, online news organization focused on local news.

Warren, a former journalist, said she is pleased to help the organization with its mission.

“The Raleigh Public Record isn't just the future of journalism in Raleigh; it has become a model in the present for fine, local, nonprofit journalism,” Warren said. “What's even better? I like the people who work there.”
