William Peace University, (http://www.peace.edu/) a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, is proud to announce that Ashley Johnson '18 has received the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting which recognizes young women who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects. Johnson created 150 diabetic care boxes for children newly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and were admitted to Vidant Health Medical Center.

Within the boxes, Johnson included an informational CD and pamphlet about high and low blood sugar, a gel bracelet, a food log notebook, and various snacks for emergency use to raise blood sugar. She also created a YouTube video to show others that her project could be replicated in their communities. Ashley said she was inspired to create the boxes because of her personal history with Type 1 Diabetes.

“From first-hand experience I knew what it was like to be extremely ill and spend time in ICU," Johnson said. "There are so many things to learn about this new lifestyle and so many changes to make once you leave the hospital."

“Through her project, Ashley has demonstrated she possesses the proven qualities of a community leader and the Girl Scout Gold Award designation is truly a remarkable achievement,” said Lisa Jones, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines. “She recognized a need in her community and took action to create a sustainable response. She turned her own experience with Type 1 Diabetes into a positive experience that has touched the lives of hundreds of children in her community who are learning about their diagnosis.”
