It’s time to dust off your VCRs. Alamo Drafthouse is excited to announce the launch of VIDEO VORTEX, a reimagining of the classic video rental store located in the lobby of the acclaimed cinema eatery’s upcoming 11-screen Raleigh location.

With over 30,000 titles (and growing), the VIDEO VORTEX rental collection will be one of the largest video archives on the planet, and serve as the backbone for Raleigh's newest (and only) video rental store. Visitors can return rentals on their next trip to Alamo Drafthouse, or they’ll have the option of mailing DVDs and blurays back to the shop with a return envelope.

Along with Blu-ray and DVD titles, the crown jewel of VIDEO VORTEX is a massive rental selection of rare VHS tapes, including titles never released on digital formats. Technology limitations won’t be a problem -- VIDEO VORTEX will also rent VCRs as well as provide renters HDMI to RCA adapters (free of charge).

The space will also feature a selection of curated blurays for sale, film-related merchandise, and Mondo releases. The store’s walls will be adorned with a huge gallery of vintage exploitation-era film posters. Hanging out at this video store will be encouraged: the store will feature a lounge offering 40 local draft beers on tap (available to go).

The inspiration for VIDEO VORTEX comes from a long-running Alamo Drafthouse programming series that celebrates straight-to-video movies from the 1980s through the early 2000s. The series is curated by Joseph A. Ziemba, founder of review site Bleeding Skull and director of AGFA and genre programming for Alamo Drafthouse, and Bleeding Skull writer Annie Choi.

“It gives me hope for humanity to see VIDEO VORTEX grow from a series at the Alamo to an actual video store,” says Ziemba. “VHS is still the only way to see hundreds of forgotten genre movies. But in this era of rare tapes selling for insane amounts of money, VIDEO VORTEX will make them easily accessible for everyone in the Raleigh film community.”

As part of this new brand undertaking, Alamo Drafthouse Raleigh is seeking passionate and driven candidates to manage the store and collection. This person will also manage the

concierge team for the theater, as well as oversee operations of the video store and lounge. Deep movie knowledge is a must, and prior video store management experience is a plus. Visit https://secure.jobappnetwork.com/apply/c_alamo/Video-Vortex-Manager-job-Raleigh-NC- US-1893184.html#s to apply.

Alamo Drafthouse is also seeking input and assistance from the local open-source programming community in Raleigh to help develop new software for managing the collection and rental process. Contact Creative Manager Steve Popson at steve.popson@drafthouse.com for more details.

Alamo Drafthouse’s Raleigh location is currently under construction on New Bern Avenue, in the Longview Gardens shopping center, with an anticipated opening in the first quarter of 2018. Called the “Best Theater Ever” by Time Magazine and “The Coolest Theater in the World” by Wired, Alamo Drafthouse delivers the best film, food and drink all in one seat and has been heralded for unique programming events, high exhibition standards, and an extensive menu made from scratch.
