To assist consumers in preventing all types of identity theft, Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina announces two spring “Secure Your ID” Day events in Raleigh: Sat., April 16, 2016 at Trademark Properties on Wade Ave. at Oberlin Road; and Sat., April 30, 2016 at Coastal Federal Credit Union located at 1000 St. Albans Drive. Both events will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and include document shredding, collection of computers and hard-drives for secure destruction, electric/electronics recycling and identity protection tips.

BBB reports that fifty-six percent of identity theft victims traced the theft to something that was stolen from their own possession. Moreover, a recent Identity Fraud Report by Javelin Strategy & Research, the number of identity fraud victims in 2015 was at its second highest level in six years. In the past year alone, there has been a 113 percent increase in incidence of new account fraud, which is the opening of credit accounts with fraudulent information.

“Shredding paper documents and safely disposing of used computers and mobile devices are key ways to protect an individual’s identity and prevent new account fraud,” says Mallory Wojciechowski, president and CEO of BBB serving Eastern North Carolina. “Our free shred events offer the perfect opportunity to safely dispose of documents and electronics that contain personal information.”

During the event, local partners ProShred, A Shred Ahead and GEEP will be on site. Individuals are encouraged to bring up to three boxes/bags of documents that have been removed from binders, and up to five electric/electronic devices. Accepted items are computers, cell phones, tablets, TVs, printers, fax machines, vacuums, DVD/CD players, microwaves and toasters.

To date, the semi-annual “Secure Your ID” Day events have safely destroyed nearly 400,000 lbs. of sensitive documents and nearly 100,000 lbs. of electronics. Additional event information is available at www.bbbshred.org.

Curtis media group stations KIX 102.9, WPTF, QDR and Radio 96.1will be serving as media sponsors for both events.
