BAE students and alumni are leaders in providing a safe and abundant food supply; clean water and air; renewable sources of energy; as well as life-enhancing and life-saving products to the world. Coats was nominated for the award due to both his outstanding contributions in his profession and the BAE program.

"I am proud of my friend and business partner, Larry Coats, for receiving this honor,” said David Kalish, managing partner Coats and Bennett, P.L.L.C. "Larry is a true leader in the world of preparation and prosecution of patent applications in a variety of technologically diverse areas. That the department of BAE selected him as their Distinguished Alumni for 2017 is a statement not only to his commitment to the legal community, but also his passion for the BAE program at NC State.”
