The WakeMed Foundation is pleased to announce six new board members to assist with efforts to advance the mission of the Foundation through philanthropic initiatives and programs that support WakeMed Health & Hospitals. Audie P. Barefoot Jr., Howie J. Jung, Kristin Gatchel Replogle, R. Michael Gray, Peter M. Scott III, and Richard (Rick) B. Guirlinger round out the 28-member WakeMed Foundation Board.

Audie P. Barefoot Jr.

A second generation realtor and Triangle native, Barefoot is the president and CEO of Fonville Morisey & Barefoot Inc. He has been honored as Realtor of the Year and has served with numerous professional and civic organizations, including Raleigh Board of Realtors (past president), NC Association of Realtors, Raleigh MLS, Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County, Parade of Homes, Raleigh and Cary Chambers of Commerce, Builder Marketing Society (trustee), Urban Land Institute, Wachovia Bank, Triangle Tomorrow and United Way.

Howie J. Jung

Jung started a retail hardware business in 1976. Today, he and his wife own and operate two Ace Hardware stores in the Raleigh market. He has been an active board member with several national and regional organizations, including the national Ace Hardware Corporation and the Research Triangle Park Chapter of the National Association of Corporate Directors. He currently serves as board chair of Paragon Commercial Bank.

Kristin Gatchel Replogle

Kristin Replogle is a former senior speech-language pathologist at The Massachusetts General Hospital. Replogle serves on the NC State University Institute for Nonprofits Advisory Board and on the boards of SAFEchild and the Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines. She previously served the boards of Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities and NC CARES. She is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Raleigh. Replogle and her husband, John, have four daughters.

R. Michael Gray

Gray is an advisor with CAPTRUST, an investment management and consulting firm headquartered in Raleigh with offices in 13 other markets. Gray is a CPA and former KPMG tax partner having relocated to Raleigh with his family in 1994. He has been involved in significant volunteer and non-profit roles via the boards of The Montessori School of Raleigh, Band Together, Junior Achievement and North Ridge Country Club. Mike and his wife, Susan, have two children, Addison and Roth, with the former following her parents to the University of Kentucky.

Peter M. Scott, III

Scott retired from Progress Energy in 2008 where he served as both CFO and president and CEO. Prior to joining Progress Energy, Scott was the founder and president of Scott, Madden and Associates, a general management consulting firm headquartered in Raleigh. He was also a former partner and principal in the Atlanta office of the Los Angeles based Theodore Barry and Associates. Scott serves on the board of NYSE listed Cleco Corporation and the board of governors of RTI International. He is a member of the Kenan-Flagler School of Business board of visitors, and member of the St. Mary’s School board of trustees.

Richard (Rick) B. Guirlinger

Guirlinger has been Vice President of Special Projects for General Parts International, Inc., d/b/a/ CARQUEST Auto Parts, WORLDPAC, Inc., and other subsidiaries since 1988. He is a member of the Michigan Association of CPAs and received his CPA Certificate of Examination in 1977. Guirlinger lends his expertise to various community boards and committees, some of which include the Triangle Community Foundation, the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, Wake County Schools and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. He is married to Annette and has two grown sons.

“With the addition of these new board members, we fondly bid farewell to seven members who have served the WakeMed Foundation with a great enthusiasm and passion for WakeMed,” commented Jack Radford, executive director of the WakeMed Foundation. Board members cycling off the WakeMed Foundation Board include: Daphne A. Ashworth, Cary R&D Enterprises, Inc.; Brenda C. Gibson, Community Leader; Wilson Hayman, Poyner & Spruill, LLP; Katherine O. Keener, Community Leader; Thomas B. Oxholm, Wake Stone Corporation; Melba T. Sparrow, Sparrow Construction Company, Inc.; and Michael A. Weeks, Weeks Turner Architecture, PA.

Radford continued, “This is a very exciting time for the WakeMed Foundation. We are grateful to the board members who helped us raise $10 million toward our $20 million Just for Kids Kampaign goal. This $10 million built the WakeMed Children’s Hospital, the first project in WakeMed’s history fully funded through philanthropic support. Moving forward, the Board and the Foundation are focused on raising the additional $10 million needed to expand Wake County’s only Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery, and I am excited to undertake this challenge with guidance from our exceptionally strong, community-led board.”
