Offering eight $2,500 scholarships to military community in North Carolina

WGU North Carolina Chancellor Catherine Truitt and USO of North Carolina President and CEO John Falkenbury have announced the formation of a new scholarship program to benefit the North Carolina military community. The Military Service Scholarship will provide scholarships valued at $2,500 each to eight deserving members of the North Carolina military community. The announcement was made Friday, Feb. 22 at a special Veterans of Influence event organized by the Triangle Business Journal.

The scholarships are available to currently serving military members, veterans, and their families, and can be applied to any of the more than 60 bachelor’s and master’s degrees offered by WGU in business, IT, education, and healthcare. Winners of the Military Service Scholarships will be credited with $625 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms.

While eight scholarships will be awarded, this is a competitive program. Scholarships will be awarded based on a candidate’s academic record, readiness for online study, and current competency, as well as other considerations. The application deadline is May 31, 2019. More information can be found at nc.wgu.edu/militaryservice.

WGU North Carolina is an affiliate of the national nonprofit online Western Governors University. WGU has been recognized for 11 consecutive years by Military Advanced Education & Transition as a “Top School,” and for seven consecutive years as a Military Friendly® School. Presently, about 18 percent of the nearly 3,000 North Carolina students enrolled in WGU are affiliated with the military community.

“As a military spouse, I know firsthand the sacrifices that servicemen and women make every day,” said Truitt. “It’s our hope that the Military Service Scholarships will honor their dedication and provide a means for eight deserving North Carolinians in the military community to advance their education and achieve their professional goals.”

“Continuing education is the cornerstone of one’s professional career progression – whether in the military or transitioning into the civilian workforce,” said Falkenbury. “The USO of North Carolina is proud to be part of this effort to support service members and their families. These scholarships will provide eight awardees the opportunity to further their education and transition into civilian life or a new career.”
